In lieu of its traditional opening sketch one day after the Paris attacks, Saturday Night Live opted for a straightforward and touching address to the city.

On the first “SNL” after the attacks on September 11, 2001, NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani appeared with members of the NY Fire Department, other first responders and “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels. In 2012, after the Sandy Hook elementary-school shooting, the December 15th show opened with a children’s choir singing “Silent Night”. To which Giuliani responded, “Why start now?”
