Saturday’s bowls: Beamer goes out a victor as Virginia Tech nips Tulsa

The Virginia Tech Hokies sent legendary head coach Frank Beamer out a victor, but the Tulsa Golden Hurricane came close to spoiling the party in the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl Saturday at Independence Stadium. Tech got a huge day out of the passing game with Isaiah Ford going off for 227 receiving yards and a 75-yard touchdown, but Tulsa didn’t quit.

Pelton says he worked for a major oil company before joining GasBuddy, “where I did the pricing of the 1200-plus gas stations”. The average USA gas prices dropped below per gallon this morning for the first time since March 25, 2009, according to AAA.

Members of the Virginia Tech football team carry their trophy around the field after winning the Independence Bowl NCAA college football game against Tulsa in Shreveport, La., Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015. Virginia Tech was on pace to score 90 points at halftime, as they headed into the locker room up 45-31, looking like they’d take care of business and easily cover the 14 point spread, sending Frank Beamer off with a win in his last game.

“I mean he would disagree, but I say A-plus”, Miles said of how he would assess their start. “They were really excited for me and I was just focused on getting this last win for our seniors and Coach Beamer”. The teams also combined for a record 947 total offensive yards, topping the previous record of 912 set by SC and Missouri in 2005.

“They are passionate about our university and our football team, and we have a lot of love for them”.

“It was different. They keep battling, they always play hard”, Beamer told ESPN. “It was exciting. First time I came to Shreveport, I left here a happy guy”. “We knew he was going to have a big night”.

“We didn’t expect it to turn into a shootout like that”, quarterback Michael Brewer said. Andre Davis had 962 yards and 9 TDs in the 1999 regular season, then added 108 yards and a TD (1,070 yards, 10 TDs) in the Sugar Bowl against Florida State, back when bowl games didn’t count in season stats.

The 76 combined points were the most ever scored in one half of a bowl game. Virginia Tech controlled the line of scrimmage – gaining 370 total yards in the first two quarters – by capitalizing on Tulsa’s missed tackles, blown assignments and shoddy special teams play.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Hokies went 81 yards in 15 plays, scoring on a 1-yard run byTrey Edmunds with 7:38 left in the third quarter.

The game’s lack of defense became very apparent when TU’s Zack Langer broke off a long run, leading to a two-yard score to put the Golden Hurricane up 14-7, followed by another VT score to tie it again just minutes in.

An era has come to an end, and I wanted to share a short narration of what Coach Beamer has meant to me. He went on to absolutely torch Tulsa (6-7) while it settled into zone coverage for most of the game, finishing with 12 catches for 227 yards and a touchdown to earn offensive Most Outstanding Player honors. Dane Evans completed 63 percent of his passes for 3,954 yards and 22 touchdowns against eight interceptions. The Golden Hurricane (6-7) were coming off a two-win season a year ago and had already exceeded most expectations within the program.
