Saturday’s bowls: Washington State beats Miami
Washington State players celebrate a 20-14 victory over Miami in the Sun Bowl NCAA college football game Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015, in El Paso, Texas. The team’s last bowl win came in 2006, when it beat Nevada 21-20 in what’s now the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Miami is 0-5 since then, including a 33-17 loss to Notre Dame in the 2010 Sun Bowl.

In Washington State’s last bowl game, at Albuquerque in 2013, the Cougars blew a double-digit lead in the final 10 minutes of the game. Yearby rolled right as if on a sweep and pulled up to throw, but the pass slipped out of his hand, going end over end, and was intercepted by Shalom Lunai. A nice return set up the Hurricanes’ offense at the 28, down six points with 3:13 to play.
With the win the Cougars finish the season at 9-4, their best season in over a decade. The Canes had nine penalties for 98 yards after racking up six penalties for 63 yards in the first half.
Miami had some success getting the ball into Washington State territory, particularly in the fourth quarter, but turned three drives inside the Cougars’ 30 into only seven points. – Miami QB Brad Kaaya completed 17-of-31 passes for 219 yards and a score with a pick. Falk completed over 70% of his passes, throwing for 4,266 yards and 36 touchdowns.
The Cougars struck first after Quarterback Luke Falk found running back Jamal Morrow down the middle for a 31-yard catch and run.
The snow began to fall in the second quarter, the sky over the Franklin Mountains turning considerably whiter as the University of Miami’s season got considerably darker.
“It’s very disappointing to send the seniors and staff out with a loss”, Miami junior wide receiver Stacy Coley said. The Cougars took advantage of that holding a 20-7 lead at halftime. The two turnovers in the red zone was just huge.
The Pac-12 was a deep conference this year with 10 bowl-eligible teams, with the first four teams to play winning their bowl games, yet it was easy to overlook Washington State because the program has been down for so many years.
The Hurricanes announced December 4 that former Georgia Bulldog’s Head Coach Mark Richt would assume the vacant coaching position at Miami starting next season.
“There are a lot of decisions that have been made and there’s a couple more to be made, ” Richt said.
EL PASO, Texas ” Miami came close to ending a tumultuous season with a comeback victory. Poor offensive line play led to a punt, and penalties on defense gifted Washington State two first downs on third down throws.
Washington State: WR Gabe Marks leads the team with 99 catches for 1,125 yards and 14 TDs, while WR Dom Williams has 73 catches for 997 yards and 11 TDs. Washington State fumbled in the second quarter, but the defense forced a three-and-out.

Two of those drives ended in turnovers – one on a fumble at the 5 that might have been affected by the slick conditions and the other on what has to be considered one of the worst play calls of the year: a halfback pass for an interception. Redshirt junior safety Rayshawn Jenkins was ejected from the game on the next play for targeting Marks in the end zone.
