Somehow, Helfrich found it within himself to tell reporters, “I’m proud of the way our guys battled”.

“I don’t even know how that happened”, Pellum told reporters after the game. Honestly, I dedicate it to Trevone. “He showed me how to play like I did tonight”.
Whether it was Patterson’s wardrobe change or Oregon’s missed execution, a revived TCU scored on all nine drives in the second half behind backup quarterback Bram Kohlhausen in a performance that was eerily similar to UO’s meltdown in the regular-season finale against Oregon State, when a once-staggering Beavers offense scored 35 in the second half before a late escape by the Ducks.
OR coach Mark Helfrich said that the loss can’t be blamed on one person. Several times, OR struggled to snap the ball to him, forcing Lockie to reach low as the ball skipped on the ground.
“It’s been an awesome ride, tough way to end it today”, the junior said.
The Ducks (9-4) lost starting quarterback Vernon Adams Jr.to a head injury in the second quarter but built a 31-point halftime lead before TCU outscored OR 31-0 in the second half at the Alamodome.
In a a bowl season to forget, it appeared the Alamo Bowl would be yet another blowout.
The Oregon Ducks’ lone season with Vernon Adams at quarterback didn’t go at all as expected.
After two days of lopsided bowl results elsewhere, TCU and OR did their part to answer college football fans’ complaints. Doug Brenner could not get his timing right with backup Jeff Lockie as the circus that became the Oregon Ducks Offense put up no points as TCU continued to get back into the game. But at the start of the third OT, Kohlhausen ran in an eight-yard touchdown, giving TCU its first lead of the game, 47-41.
Trace McSorley replaced Hackenberg and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Geno Lewis on the first play of the fourth quarter and then a 20-yard strike to DaeSean Hamilton with 6:14 to play.
Running back Aaron Green had a 2-yard touchdown run with 3:32 left in the game and TCU added a two-point conversion to get within 31-28.
Oberkrom hit three in the game, the third a 46-yarder to tie the game at 41 in the second overtime period.
West Virginia quarterback Skyler Howard threw for a Cactus Bowl-record 532 yards and hit David Sills on a 15-yard pass for his fifth touchdown with 2:19 left, lifting the Mountaineers to the 43-42 win over Arizona State. – Oregon RB Royce Freeman ran 26 times for 130 yards and three scores, and ran twice for 23 yards.
Adams passed for 197 yards and a touchdown and led the Ducks on four consecutive touchdown drives, eluding sacks and throwing downfield as OR rolled early.
OR dominated for the majority of the first half, scoring 31 points and leading at halftime.
But the second half was a different story, a shift in momentum sparked by an injury to Adams late in the second quarter.

Given the way OR played in the second half of the season, and given the absence of Boykin and Doctson, a runaway Ducks victory seemed like a reasonable result to expect. He also rushed for 774 yards and 11 touchdowns. Carrington had seven catches for 107 yards and a touchdown.
