Saudi king vows to fight religious extremists after bombings

T hree cities across Saudi Arabia were struck by suicide bombers on Monday, the apparently coordinated attacks killing at least four security officers.

The attack on the Prophet’s Mosque, where the Prophet Mohammed is buried, caused outrage across Islam’s religious divide.

ISIS spokesman Abu Mohamed al-Adnani in May encouraged the group’s supporters to carry out attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack in Medina, or for two other suicide bombings the same day outside a Shia mosque in the eastern city of Qatif and near the USA consulate in Jeddah.

The Interior Ministry said it was working to identify the remains of three bodies at the site of blast, suggesting there may have been three attackers.

Another suicide attack took place near a Shiite mosque in Qatif, in the kingdom’s east.

“The security of the homeland is good – it is at its highest levels and thanks be to God it gets stronger every day”, Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz said as he visited the injured in hospital.

Shia states and organizations have likewise condemned Monday’s triple attack, including Iran, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Yemen’s Houthi militant group.

“There are no more red lines left for terrorists to cross”. Five other officers were wounded, the statement added.

For its part, the Muslim Council of Elders condemned the terrorist attacks in the Saudi cities and issued a statement calling for intensifying worldwide efforts to combat terrorist groups, Petra reported.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia on Tuesday identified the suicide bomber who struck outside the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah as a Pakistani resident of the kingdom who arrived 12 years ago to work as a driver.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, expressed “Qatar’s support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as the latter faces these crimes committed against innocent people”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the suicide bombing in Medina, which occurred on Monday in Islam’s second holiest city.
