The U.N.is supposed to provide technical assistance to Yemen’s government to look into human rights abuses, but Zeid said member states’ approval for needed U.N. personnel is pending.

According to the report, one of the Saudi Arabian-led coalition strikes hit a house in Sana’a’s Old City, a Unesco World Heritage Site, on the night of September 13, killing 18 civilians.

Fighting in Yemen has continued despite a cease-fire agreement, with U.N.-sponsored peace talks in Switzerland collapsing on Sunday but scheduled to reconvene January 14.

On Monday, clashes continued in the north of Yemen, while there was a lull in fighting in the south, even outside third city Taiz under seige from rebels, pro-government forces said.

Foreign Minister Abdulmalek al-Mikhlafi said late yesterday that President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi had chose to prolong the week-long ceasefire for another seven days in a bid to resolve the conflict.

The situation has prompted the United Nations to declare Yemen one of its highest-level humanitarian crises, estimating that more than 21 million people in Yemen need help, or about 80 percent of the population.

That evacuation was engineered by the Indian embassy in Sanaa that stayed open till the first week of April even when nearly every other major nation – including the US, European countries, China and Arab nations – had shut their missions citing security concerns.

Saudi authorities identified the Indians killed in Najran province during Houthi shelling from Yemen as S Muhamedu Gilbi (48) from Erwadi in Ramanathapuram district and Anthony (50) from Kallakurichi in Villupuram district.

At least 5,800 people have been killed and over 27,000 wounded in Yemen since March, according to the UN.

“The Saudi-led coalition has repeatedly struck houses, schools, and hospitals where no military target was in sight”, declared Stork.
