The Supreme Court today indicated that it may ban registration of diesel SUVs and luxury sedans in Delhi in view of the rising air pollution in the national capital.
The SC bench headed by leader Justice TS Thakur also directed all taxis in each Delhi and NCR to transform to Compressed herbal gas (CNG) earlier than March 2016.
Pollution surcharge shall also be doubled in Delhi, it said.
The bench therefore ordered that no vehicle that is not bound for Delhi will be allowed to enter from NH-8, that links Jaipur to Delhi, and NH-1, linking Punjab, Haryana and other northern states to Delhi via the Kundli border.
The Supreme Court is considering doubling the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) levied on commercial vehicles that cross the borders of Delhi. This ban on diesel engines also creates an environment of uncertainty and will severely impact our expansion plans and future investments put in place for the Indian market.
While Delhi is ranked the world’s worst polluted city by the World Health Organisation, and experts have warned of how sick people can get from breathing its air, authorities have failed to arrest this environmental and heath crisis from worsening over the past decade. Millions of dollars of investments have been made for manufacturing diesel cars.
Moreover, the Delhi government also proposed important measures which include vaccum cleaning of streets, odd-even formula, shut coal-based power plants, late night entry of heavy-loading vehicles, fix unpaved footpaths and many among others.
Recently, the NGT (National Green Tribunal) announced to ban on the registration of diesel cars in Delhi.
The ban will last until March 31. Over 23 percent run on diesel which produces much more carcinogenic nitrogen oxide than petrol cars.
