SC bans registration of diesel cars over 2000 cc in Delhi-NCR
The most recent study of IIT-Kanpur on air pollution in Delhi has given clinching evidence on contribution of diesel cars to Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5 – those air particulates with diametre of 2.5 microns or less causing pollution) in Delhi, the CSE said.

Earlier, the apex court had termed the rising pollution level in Delhi as “very serious” and advocated a “multi-pronged” approach to deal with the situation. The Government of NCT of Delhi shall issue advertisements to inform commercial traffic of the bypass routes and the imposition of the ECC for entry of the vehicles into Delhi, the Supreme Court said in its order. Diesel emissions have been classified by the World Health Organisation as a group-I carcinogen for the strong link with lung cancer. Thirteen of the world’s 20 most polluted cities are in India.

What it means for you: Uber and other cab aggregators will have to phase out the diesel cabs that they’re using presently and rely only on CNG cars.

In the short term, reports have already emerged that the crackdown could impact on the country’s shaky economic recovery as dealers are stuck with forecourts full of unsellable cars.
