The entire northern Bihar town was placed on high alert in view of intelligence inputs apprehending serious law and order problems in the event of the apex court cancelling Shahabuddin’s bail and sending him to jail again, according to a report in the local media.
The state government filed a special leave petition (SLP) against the bail order by the Patna High Court and said that “irreparable injury” will be caused to the conduct of around 60 criminal cases pending against the gangster-turned-politician.
But the Supreme Court has issued and notice and will hear the case on next Monday, September 26. Shahabuddin was released even as the trial in the murder of Prasad’s third son had not yet started.
Shahabuddin, who had been in jail for more than 10 years in connection with multiple cases, was granted bail by the Patna High Court on September 7 in connection with the murder of a man who witnessed the killing of two brothers in Siwan.
“There are 58 criminal cases pending against Shahabuddin and out of them he has been convicted in eight cases”, he said.
The Supreme Court today issued a notice to the Siwan strongman Shahabuddin after two pleas were filed against his bail in a murder case.
Meanwhile, the state of Bihar, in a separate plea, has sought a non-bailable warrant against Shahabuddin, whose RJD is a member of the Nitish Kumar-led Grand Alliance now ruling Bihar.
The petition has been filed by Bhushan on behalf of victim’s family who was unhappy to see Shahabuddin walking out of the Bhagalpur jail.
