SC rallies, beat Commodores 13-10

“We had four minutes left in the game”, said Fry.

OUR PICK: I don’t feel comfortable giving up any amount of points with Vanderbilt but it’s hard to see how SC will move the ball tonight.

And now there will be questions about just how long the Mason era should last. On the next play, Deebo Samuel had another big grab, which lead to the Gamecocks 1st score of the season a 48-yard field goal by Elliot Fry.

In head coach Will Muschamp’s first game at SC (1-0, 1-0 SEC), the Gamecocks posted the final 13 points to claim a 13-10 road win in Southeastern Conference play at Vanderbilt (0-1, 0-1 SEC) on Thursday night at Vanderbilt Stadium.

So did senior quarterback Perry Orth. “Just some really gutsy plays offensively and defensively as the game wore on and I’m extremely proud of this football team and I’m proud to be the head coach of SC”. To have any hope of a bowl, SC has to make it out of September no worse than 2-2. They were neither efficient nor explosive, so they’re hoping a new year, some new faces and a little more experience will help pick up the pace. “He deserves to start, too”, Muschamp said. The game is also airing as a live stream online. The two combined for 35 carries, 165 yards and 1 touchdown.

Most of the pass attempts were quick throws within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, which helped Vandy nearly intercept him twice.

“We wanted to get Brandon in (the game) in the first quarter”. After gaining just 88 yards of total offense in the first half, SC gained 119 yards in the fourth quarter alone.

Kyle Shurmur finished last season as the starter and further cemented his place with a solid spring.

Missed Muschamp’s postgame press conference?

This nearly proved to be prophetic, but second half adjustments made by South Carolina’s offense were enough to steal a win on the road. We’ve already thought it out. But Orth found Bryan Edwards for a gain of 16. Lorenzo Nunez, who started two games at quarterback last season but has been working nearly exclusively at receiver in the preseason, did not make the Gamecocks’ travel squad. Several of the catches were hard ones, and Edwards threw a key block on Samuel’s TD run.

Orth won’t be alone in getting snaps at QB for the Gamecocks against Vanderbilt, as Muschamp said Monday that “two guys will play”. An injury to guard Donell Stanley caused a shift in personnel as the game continued.

Vandy punted eight times and registered 14 first downs. Muschamp largely has praised the line’s work in practice, but it wasn’t a great debut in game action.

The story of the game for the Commodore faithful may be that Vandy’s offense didn’t make similar strides in the second half.

“We let a winnable game slip away”, Mason said.

The Commodores haven’t beaten SC since 2008, and this gives them a big chance to kick off the season in style. The Commodores needed 72 more rushing attempts to reach that total than did the Gamecocks.
