SC refuses to hold early hearing of odd-even petition

It is still a moot point if pollution levels fell during the period but Delhi’s odd-even experiment has still made a connect with its motorists.

Kejriwal said the scheme, which ends on Friday, managed to increase the efficiency of the public transportation system, especially buses, as congestion came down “drastically”.

The odd-even policy was announced by the Aam Aadmi government after the high court said the national capital had turned into a gas chamber. The policy allows odd numbered cars to ply on odd dated days and even numbered ones on even dated days.

“Odd-even scheme had been a success because of people’s determination to follow the formula”. The traffic department of Delhi Police fined over 2,000 violators of the odd-even scheme till Tuesday, officials said. This poll was conducted to gauge the success of the rule and get citizen insights that can potentially be used to replicate the odd-even rule in Gurgaon. “Of the total (pollution) only three percent comes from cars, the rest is heavy duty industry and other vehicles and so on”, Vinod Dasari, president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said Thursday. In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Delhi the most polluted city in the world, more so than Beijing, which famously enforced traffic restrictions to improve air quality during the 2008 Olympic Games.

Kejriwal said most people, including those who were inconvenienced by the plan, admitted that the odd-even curbs severely restricted the quantum of traffic on Delhi’s roads, making commuting a pleasant experience. Urging residents to continue following the scheme voluntarily, Kejriwal said, “From tomorrow, only the fine is getting over, but I urge you all to voluntarily continue the scheme because it’s for our health”.

“The government is taking some step to control the pollution”.
