SC to hear Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail plea tomorrow

The apex court’s observation came after a lawyer alleged in the court that Delhi Police was being pressurised not to oppose bail of Kanhaiya Kumar, facing sedition charge. ToI added how the court said: “We are keeping an eye on law and order…” While Bassi didn’t care to visit the spot, which is barely one kilometre from the police headquarters, he gave himself a pat on the back for doing a good job when confronted by reporters.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi had on Wednesday briefed the Prime Minister’s office on the JNU case.

The violence by lawyers occurred despite the Supreme Court ordering the police to ensure security in the court and has drawn wide criticism of the lawyers and police.

JNU Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on sedition charges and is now in judicial custody, on Thursday moved the Supreme Court for bail. First, a group of lawyers claiming to be from Sonepat who were shouting slogans in defence of Kumar were dragged into the complex by another set of lawyers yelling, “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. During the hearing before metropolitan magistrate Lovleen, only six lawyers representing Kanhaiya were allowed to be inside the court room along with a JNU professor and five journalists.

Kanhaiya has been kept in cell number 3 of Tihar jail where even terrorist Afzal Guru was locked in Tihar jail. “I do not think you can say the situation at Patiala House today went out of hand”, he said. Guru always denied plotting the attack, which was carried out by Kashmiri militants.

Kanhaiya Kumar was sent to prison until 2 March, when his case would be heard.

Three office-bearers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) unit of ABVP on Wednesday resigned from the student wing of the BJP strongly protesting against the Centres handling of the raging row at the premier university and “legitimising” actions of right wing fascist forces.
