SC to hear petition on Rahul Gandhi defamation case today

In a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi over the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) issue, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah today said he had “proved” that national interest had no place in his mind and asked if the Congress vice president had joined hands with separatist forces and wanted another division of India. “To top it, the statements given by Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders in JNU amply demonstrates yet again that they have no regard and love for the nation and its interests”, he said. “We ll not accept this, we will fight this”, he said.

Amidst the raging JNU row, the party also dismissed Mr. Gandhi’s allegations that the BJP is muzzling the youth by branding them as anti-nationals.

“Rahul Gandhi’s membership in Parliament should be cancelled and appropriate action must be initiated against him”, the BJP MP demanded.

Shah said. The BJP chief wondered how long Congress will continue with its vote back politics and asked if it worries about “providing shelter” to anti-national activities while pursuing its vote back politics. “They are suppressing the voice of Indian students, but we will not let it happen”, the Congress leader said.

During his visit to the JNU campus, Rahul Gandhi compared the current government at the centre with Hitler’s Germany.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who made two trips to Hyderabad in solidarity with protesting students following Rohith Vemula’s suicide, condemned the Modi government and ABVP actions and accused them of bullying an institution like the JNU simply because it was not toeing their line. Is this Rahul Gandhi’s nationalism and patriotism that he defends those who raise slogans in favour of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru and support separatism in Kashmir?

However, sources said, BJP’s stand on JNU row is not just confined to ideological or security issues.

Congress general secretary Dr CP Joshi, senior party-leader Avinash Pandey, APCC president Anjan Dutta, State PWD Minister Ajanta Neog, Agriculture Minister Rakibul Hussain, former Minister Rajib Lochan Pegu, Jorhat MLA Raja Goswami, Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and many other Congress leaders were also present in the meeting at Titabor. What lies inside the heart comes out at times, he said.

The prime minister should put his foot down and say this is not acceptable to us.

Leaders of Left parties and JD(U) on Saturday met home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi demanding the release of JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar who was arrested on sedition charge in connection with an event organised on the campus against the hanging of Afzal Guru.
