Scandal’s Take on Abortion and the Planned Parenthood Fight Was flawless
Like Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) on “Grey’s Anatomy”, who terminated a pregnancy in season eight, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) was shown reclining back onto an examination table and placing her feet in stirrups, the implication being that she was aborting a pregnancy. She’s hit rock bottom in a lot of ways. But as often happens in broken relationships, particularly with a scorned partner, those wounds just don’t stop bleeding, and Mellie… she’s not having it. There’s that’s a huge scene when we were trying to sign the divorce papers that devolved into this ugly fight, and Mellie voting for the impeachment…. “She’s in survival mode”.

Though it’d be understandable if Mellie is out for revenge after Liv burned her so badly, the FLOTUS closet inheritor is the furthest thing from her mind. The moment another politician’s wife asks her for help with a problem, Liv is alert and ready to take action, only to find out that it’s for a snickerdoodle recipe.
Morton says that Rowan “absolutely believes” he’s protecting his daughter and his country.
Following in Mellie’s footsteps, Olivia comes home from a long day and goes straight for the jar of hooch Mellie hid in the White House closet. Now she’s got a place of her own and she’s got a job.
Decorations and a large tree that sits prettily in a corner, as the main character reflects on her life choices?
While Mellie is making history, Olivia is running around being a faux first lady. She admits that the previous arrangement worked out because Mellie took care of the housewife duties and Olivia was the political helpmate.
So, Fitz is alone as is Liv. There were no effective Papa Poe rants (are any of those effictive any more?), no Fitz “I wait for you!” speeches, no Cyrus diatribes. So you don’t. And then, next year, you give them even less, and even less the year after that, and you keep chipping away at their budget until, before you know it, Planned Parenthood no longer exists.
“The only thing I can say is, now that Rowan is out of jail, out of prison, he is someone who is used to being around power, someone who is all about power”, he says. After being released by Huck, Rowan welcomed Jake back into his family as one of his “sons”.
Shonda Rhimes teased us that this season she was giving the viewers what we wanted, but to be careful what we wished for.
“That whole thing is very complicated”. It’s extreme and I think ill-advised of Fitz, because putting Olivia in a box is not generally the wisest course.
I would’ve thought it would’ve happened a lot sooner than it has!
“Mellie cares about her life”. It’s ‘I could’ve done something. She’s caused families to break apart. No single mom has ever run for president. She’s really been butting her head against the wall for all of the first half of this season.
For the first time Olivia and Mellie’s roles were completely reversed. The scene ends with a shot of Pope’s face, eyes open.
It is also a reminder that the Vermont/jam fantasy between Fitz and Olivia is just that-a fantasy between two people who truly weren’t meant to be. “It’s really seismic and pivotal and transformational and fantastic, not just for Mellie, but everyone”.
