She said the “three or four shirts” stolen were long-sleeve models created to be worn to prevent mosquito bites.

“What we have subsequently found is that the fire alarms had been silenced while they were carrying out maintenance on the building next door to ours”, she said.

Google today announced a set of new features to help people follow the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, which begin this week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Long sleeves have been recommended for all visitors coming for the Olympics due to the threat of the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which has caused birth defects and some neurological problems in adults.

“The stairwells and corridors on the first few levels filled with smoke”, Chiller said – but the smoke alarms did not go off.

“What we think has happened, is that a cigarette was thrown in a rubbish bin or on rubbish and that’s what started the fire”, she said, and called for a reminder to be sent to staff that the Village is non-smoking.

Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred says the computers and shirts were stolen while rooms were vacant during a fire in the basement of the Australian building at the athletes’ village on Friday.

The Olympic Village had been described as “neither safe nor ready” by Australian Chef de Mission Kitty Chiller earlier last week.

She said she had received no reports of problems at any of the training sites or venues.
