Scherzer’s no-hit bid broken up by Lindor in 7th inning
Tomlin gave up a three-run homer to Jayson Werth in the second inning Wednesday afternoon and the Indians never really recovered as they fell to Washington, 7-4, at Nationals Park. Bench coach Brad Mills, who replaced him as manager for the 3-1 victory, said Francona went back to the hotel to rest as a precaution. With two outs, Tyler Naquin walked on a 3-2 pitch to give the Indians their first baserunner.

Scherzer, bidding for his third no-hitter, retired 19 of the first 20 batters before struggling in the seventh. Scherzer’s errant pick-off throw allowed Lindor to go third, and Ramirez extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a double, giving the Indians a 1-0 lead. On Wednesday, Werth got on base and drove in runs himself with a homer while the Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians 7-4.
By then, the Nationals were enjoying a three-run lead.
With one out, Rajai Davis singled and went to second on a ground out. He is 8-for-16 in his brief major league career.
Cleveland Indians’ Jose Ramirez (11) celebrates with teammates after driving in a run and later scoring during the seventh inning of a baseball game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park, Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016, in Washington.
MARLINS 2, GIANTS 0: Tom Koehler pitched seven innings to help Miami win at home. Revere had two hits, including a double, his first extra-base hit since July 23. Indians just outplayed them, but that’s what games are all about, sometimes you get beat.
ESPN’s iPhone app was pushing alerts throughout the night, but they were all directed at Scherzer who was his usual, dominant self, not allowing a single hit over the first six innings.
Correa hit a two-run shot and tied his career high for RBIs.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Todd Frazier belted a three-run homer in the 10th inning to propel Chicago over Kansas City.
David Robertson (3-2) blew a save in the ninth when Alcides Escobar’s two-out single scored pinch-runner Jarrod Dyson. Jarrod Dyson ran for Morales and stole second and scored on Alcides Escobar’s two-out single. It was the Werth’s 15 homer of the season and it came with two out. Jose Ramirez has managed 113 hits with 56 runs and 46 RBI this year.
Werth spearheaded an offensive outburst for the Nationals, who had scored three runs in their previous three games combined.
Arizona’s Zack Greinke returned from a side strain and pitcher the Diamondbacks to a 5-3 win at the New York Mets. Tuesday’s game marked the first of a two-game set in Washington for the American League Central leaders.
The rally made a victor out of Greinke (11-3), who was activated from the disabled list before the game after missing five weeks with a left oblique injury.
Without Harper, the Nationals put a runner on base in six of the seven innings against Bauer.
Marco Estrada (7-5) gave up three runs, two earned, in five innings. And so it was a well-played and well-pitched game. Howard hit the bases-clearing double to right for insurance runs in the victory that dropped the Dodgers a game behind first-place San Francisco in the NL West.
Jenkins scattered three hits and a walk while striking out three. In the finale, he put San Francisco ahead with his 11th homer leading off the fourth. It was only the third earned run allowed by Jenkins (2-2) over his past three starts, spanning 18 innings. It is just so happened that the Indians hit some decent pitches. And then think one last time (I promise) about how that very same starting rotation, during the month of August, ranked 29th amongst its peers in both ERA and FIP.

After Neal exited, Liam Hendriks threw 1 2/3 flawless innings with two strikeouts. Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 24th save.
