Scholes wants to see Carrick-Pogba partnership at Man Utd

Perhaps he was played too far forward tonight, when the solution seems to be, asPaul Scholes was suggesting after tonight’s match, operating with a controlling midfielder behind him to allow him to flourish.

“I felt sorry for him against City, because I’ve played in games like that when you’re in a two-man centre-midfield and you get completely overrun”.

Pogba has come in for criticism for a below-par performance during the derby clash at Old Trafford as he struggled to make a telling impact on the game.

Speaking about his showing, Scholes believes Pogba is now trying to do too much.

‘I think Schneiderlin is nearly more concerned about his defensive role rather than being the playmaker in the team, ‘ continued Scholes.

The Red Devils ended up losing 2-1 to their bitter local rivals as Mourinho tasted defeat for the first time as Manchester United boss.

“I don’t really know what position he’s playing in”.

“He seems to be a little bit all over the place at times – trying to do too much on the ball”. He should keep it simple for now. They didn’t buy a Lionel Messi to go and beat five players and stick it in the top corner all the time. He’s trying to beat three or four players running will the ball. He’s got skill, he can pass it forward, he can run’.

Manchester United have now lost 4 consecutive away matches in Europe and back to back defeat under Jose Mourinho.

‘If he just plays one-two touch, sticks the ball into Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) and runs, nobody can live with that, ‘ he said. He’s got so much pace and so much power. ‘They probably need to go into the transfer market for somebody like that.

“At Juventus he had Pirlo, one of the best playmakers in the world”.

Scholes suggested Michael Carrick but Morgan Schneiderlin may in fact the answer based on his own showing tonight. I think it needs somebody like that. A Luka Modric or a Toni Kroos (the Real Madrid midfield pair).
