The bus had just picked up arriving members of the Legacy High School football squad Sunday afternoon and was circling back to the airport when it crashed.
Authorities say that 17 to 20 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals. Three school buses were leaving the airport, police said.
“It’s my understanding they were all able to get out on their own except for the [deceased] driver who remains on scene”, said Farr, during an impromptu press conference at DIA. It was not immediately clear how many children and adults were transported to area hospitals and their conditions were unknown, police said.
The crash happened at 4:08 p.m. MT, airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said. Police interviewed the football players about the crash.
The players from Broomfield’s Legacy High School were returning from a game against Chino Hills High School in California, reports KDVR.
An official with DIA tweets that all passenger pickups were taking place on Terminal West because of the crash at the east terminal.
