School bus driver killed, other injured in crash at airport

Police say the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck was behind a school bus.

Authorities said 17 to 20 passengers were taken to nearby hospitals.

“[The driver] ran off the right side of the roadway”, said Denver Police Sgt. Mike Farr.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Legacy football team, coaches, and all families affected.”

The crash stunned students at the school in Broomfield, north of Denver.

The Legacy High team had played a game Friday against Chino Hills High School in suburban Los Angeles.

Officials at Denver Health Medical Center they had five patients: two in critical condition, two in serious condition and one fair.

Her husband said she didn’t have any existing medical conditions.

The driver’s name and age have not been released.

On Sunday evening, according to the Denver Post, students who had not been injured in the crash gathered with parents inside the Denver International Airport.

Students at Legacy High School in Broomfield had counselors available and were shielded from reporters Monday. Police were interviewing the football players about the crash.

The adults – three coaches and the bus driver – suffered the worst injuries in the crash as a result of being in the front of the bus, where the impact from the crash occurred. Investigators still don’t know what caused chopper to drive directly into the pillar.

The students on board were mostly junior varsity football players returning home from a game in California.

Fifteen students and three staff members were injured, sending 10 of them to hospitals, officials said.
