School Supplies Are Tax-Free in Virginia During Tax Holiday

Virginia and Maryland are giving consumers a tax break on back-to-school shopping next month with separate sales tax-free events.

Maryland will have a sales tax-free week from August 14 to 20 with no sales tax on clothing or footwear purchases up to $100 per item.

Those items include athletic clothing, athletic pads and guards, baby clothes, coats and jackets, costumes, dresses, lab coats, trousers and shorts, scarves, shirts, suits and socks, to name a few. In Virginia, you won’t have to pay sales tax on many supplies during a sales tax holiday.

Most school and office supplies, such as pens, loose-leaf paper, scissors, binders, backpacks, and construction paper, priced at $20 or less.

Taxable items include briefcases, envelopes and business supplies. Maryland’s sales tax-free week does not cover school supplies.

The News Service report also stated that regardless of the number of tax-free days, the Florida Retail Federation says the tax holiday provides an economic boost to retailers.

The exemption does not apply to Energy Star or WaterSense products purchased for trade, business or resale.
