Marouane Fellaini insists Manchester United’s players believe in Louis van Gaal’s philosophy and can win the title this season.

“They are an average team and with an average team you get average performances”, said the former England midfielder.

Reflecting his views on the same, the Dutchman said that although he can not defend the growing criticism against him, his club performed better than a year ago, the Guardian reported.

United were beaten 3-2 by Wolfsburg, conceding some sloppy goals, and Keane was scathing in his assessment of a side that spent over £100million during the summer and will now drop into the Europa League.

“People talk about the tactics and the systems but it’s about the players as well”.

Defence: van Gaal has problems in defence as Chris Smalling is a major doubt for the game after suffering a groin injury against Wolfsburg in midweek.

“But when you see the facts we went further in the Capital One Cup (this season), qualified for the Champions League group, we have played all these matches and are still in a very good position in the league”. And within 10 minutes they taking the lead, so that’s football.

It is the latest report of disquiet within the club – although Van Gaal does have the backing of United’s hierarchy.

Schweinsteiger was taken off with twenty minutes to go in Wolfsburg.

Van Persie left for Fenerbahce for around £4m in July despite the centre-forward starting Van Gaal’s first season in charge as a favourite to replace Nemanja Vidic as United’s captain.

“I’ve said to the players, now it’s over in the Champions League – you can not show your qualities any more on the highest podium”.

Although former striker Michael Owen warned: “They probably will (spend millions more in the transfer window) but whether they can rely on Louis van Gaal spending them wisely is the big question”, he told BT Sport.

“Obviously we’re disappointed as a whole group and we’ve got to move on”.

“We trust him”, said the Belgium global.

Given the reputation of James Ducker and The Times newspaper, it is unlikely that the story is fabricated, in which case it is clear that someone close to the Manchester United dressing room was happy to spill some secrets.
