GENEVA (AP) – The World Health Organization says the outbreak of Zika remains an worldwide health emergency and that while the virus continues to hit new countries, experts still aren’t sure how big the risk is that pregnant women who catch the virus will give birth to brain-damaged babies. “However, the mosquitoes here in Middle Tennessee may be able to spread the Zika virus if they bite someone else”.

Singapore is encouraging residents to use insect repellent, clear blockages in drains and wear long-sleeved clothing to protect themselves from mosquitoes as the number of Zika infections rose in this city state. As a result, the Brazilian government warned against women trying to conceive while they are deemed at high risk of developing the virus.

More than two billion people could be at risk from Zika virus outbreaks in parts of Africa and Asia, according to scientists writing in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.

“They used the spread of a related virus, dengue, as a model for Zika since the same mosquito species transmits both diseases.

Wherever there is a competent vector, in this case the Aedes aegypti (mosquito), there is a risk that the virus will spread”. The study reported findings that took into account climate conditions, population density and the volume of travelers that would be returning from other areas with known Zika outbreaks.

WHO executive director of outbreaks and health emergencies Peter Salama said health workers were trained on how to deal with the consequences of infection, helping women manage their pregnancies and dealing with a newborn baby with a brain disorder.

The CDC is recommending pregnant women avoid traveling to Zika-affected areas which include areas of Florida http://www.cdc.gov/zika/intheus/florida-update.html and countries ranging from Mexico into the Caribbean, Central America and South America.

The ministry has started control activities such as eliminating mosquito breeding sites and fog spraying in her residential area and other places that the patient had visited.
