“Disruption to travel and some flooding of low-lying land and individual properties is possible”.
A spokesman said: “River and lake levels are normal for the time of year so there is some capacity but catchments are wet and following the December floods are likely to respond quickly to rainfall particularly in the smaller upland rivers and streams”.
In the USA, 11 states declared emergencies and at least 29 people were killed as Winter Storm Jonas shut down large parts of eastern America.
‘We will issue flood warnings and alerts where necessary as rivers respond to the rainfall, which could also inundate drains, so people need to be ready for flash flooding in some places.
Forecasters have warned of “heavy and persistent” rain from Tuesday morning and into Wednesday as the killer blizzard that battered America heads for the UK.
Residents are being urged by the Environment Agency to check their flood risk, be prepared for flooding and be cautious if travelling.
The weather front will bring heavy downpours to the United Kingdom prompting warnings of flooding from the Met Office.
It says an active frontal system is expected to become slow-moving across parts of western and northwestern Britain through tomorrow and into Wednesday.
“That depression will affect us in the United Kingdom this week, having crossed the Atlantic, it will bring us another surge of mild but very moist air resulting in heavy rainfall”.
“And because we’ve had so much rain falling on already saturated ground, s ome of the areas experiencing that will be the ones who have experienced flooding already”.
“Across northwest England and Scotland there could be upwards of 150mm, nearly rivalling what we saw in December”.
“I want to assure them that we are taking all possible steps to prepare for the storm”.
Teams from the Environment Agency would be working around the clock, checking and maintaining flood defences, clearing blockages in watercourses and monitoring river levels.
