He was on tour with his band Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts who were due to play at the Medina Ballroom, but the show was cancelled.
Although the cause of death is unknown at this time, Weiland has been known to have been struggling with heavy drug addiction, such as heroin and cocaine, for some time now. “It’s true.” Weiland’s manager, Tom Vitorino, also confirmed to the Times that Weiland was dead, but he offered no extra details regarding the death.
Actress Juliette Lewis was one of the first to pay tribute to the singer following news of his death: “Sad to hear about Scott Weiland passing”.
Weiland was dogged by substance abuse problems throughout his career.
“At this time we ask that the privacy of Scott’s family be respected”, the statement said.
Weiland, known for his growling vocals and shock of dyed red hair, came to symbolize the early 1990s grunge era as lead singer and lyricist for the Stone Temple Pilots. The album introduced fans to the hits “Big Empty”, “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song”.
Chester Bennington, the vocalist for Linkin Park, began playing with Stone Temple Pilots in May of 2013, billing themselves as Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Benningtonas they toured and released the EP High Rise that October.
The star said: “Past demons are past demons, that’s stuff that I dealt with 14 years ago”.
The Stone Temple Pilots went their separate ways in 2003 and Weiland joined Velvet Revolver, which featured former Guns N’ Roses members Slash and Duff McKagan.
