“Trumbo” star Bryan Cranston earned a best actor nod for his role as Dalton Trumbo, while Helen Mirren got a best supporting actress nomination for playing gossip columnist Hedda Hopper. The movie is set to premier in Lagos, Nigeria tomorrow at the Silver Bird Galleria, with Elba and an array of celebrities in attendance.

The SAG Awards will be held on January 30.
The movie “The Big Short”, which is based on the true story of people who predicted the 2008 financial crisis, also received a nod in this category, as did the cast of “Trumbo” and the cast of “Straight Outta Compton”. Fellow Australians Chris Hemsworth (In the Heart of the Sea) and Jason Clarke (Everest) were also snubbed for lead actor Globe and SAG nominations, so can probably rule out their Oscar chances.
“The nominees for best film actor are Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) and Johnny Depp (Black Mass)”.
In a year when Hollywood’s lack of diversity has become of critical concern following last Oscar’s all-white acting slate, the individual performance nominees for movies remained largely monochromatic, save for Elba’s supporting nominations.
Hollywood awards season continues on Thursday (midnight Friday AEDT) with the Golden Globes nomination ceremony.
The SAG nominations are the first major awards announcement in Tinseltown’s glittering awards season, which climaxes with the Academy Awards in February.
Big winners in film included Trumbo, which leads the pack with three total nominations, while Carol, The Danish Girl, The Big Short, Steve Jobs, Room, Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation garnered two apiece. She added a third mention as part of the nominated ensemble cast for Trumbo.
Also in contention are Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room, Helen Mirren in Woman In Gold, and Saoirse Ronan’s trip to Brooklyn.
On the comedy series front, the nominated actresses are Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”); Edie Falco who picked up her record-setting 22nd nod for “Nurse Jackie”; Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”); 17-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation“).
