SDCC 2016: American Gods trailer shows, you are what you worship

The casting for the upcoming Starz series American Gods, adapting the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, has grown with an SDCC reveal that Kristen Chenoweth coming on board as Easter. On the way to her funeral, he encounters the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, and – long story short – finds himself in a deep dive into America’s secret folkloriffic underbelly.

That is where Bryan Fuller’s skills as a master at fantasy television should come in handy, and the American Gods trailer shows his mastery.

Executive producer Bryan Fuller put the adaptation another way, saying that it becomes “fan fiction, in a wonderful way”.

The big surprise at the presentation, of course, was the special appearance of Kristin Chenoweth and the news that she will be playing the goddess Easter in the show. Take, for example, this recently tweeted image from Gaiman showing Laura Moon (played by actress Emily Browning). Gillian Anderson, Pablo Schreiber, Yetide Badaki, and Bruce Langley round out the cast. The American Gods premiere date has yet to be announced, although many believe it will come in 2017. Do you think the series will do justice to the book? But it just may be that the latest attempt at bringing Gaiman’s genius to the screen, the Starz program American Gods, effectively serves the words and ideas the writer committed to print back in 2001. “We get to spend a lot more time with a lot more characters than in the book”, Gaiman told the Comic-Con crowd, which was naturally receptive to him.

American Gods continues to build my anticipation more and more with every crumb of information they release.

The idea behind American Gods is everybody worships something, and the show will tackle such topical subjects as women’s rights, gun control, racial divides and social media.
