Seahawks ‘confident’ Russell Wilson will play Sunday

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is suffering from an ankle sprain after taking a beating in yesterday’s win over the Miami Dolphins.

Wilson was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins when defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh sacked him and stepped on his ankle.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson limped through an ankle injury he sustained early in the second half to lead Seattle on a game-winning drive.

Even though he said that he would be fine after the match ended, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports that the sprained ankle is still affecting him to that level that his status for Week 2 is in question.

Should Wilson be out for a short period of time, the Seahawks may turn to rookie Trevone Boykin, the only other quarterback on the team.

Wilson hasn’t missed a start in his four-plus National Football League seasons.

Head coach Pete Carroll expects Wilson to play next week against the rams as his x-rays and MRI came back negative.

The Seahawks also had second-year pro Jake Heaps on their training-camp roster but released him during their last round of cuts before the season. The Rams will hope to continue what has been a somewhat odd hex on Seattle, having won three of the past four games against the Seahawks.

Back home after an all-night flight from Seattle, the Dolphins started the process Monday of figuring out what needs to get better on the field to have a chance at New England this weekend. We have to take into account that it is going to be hard.

“He’s walking around today”, Carroll said Monday.

“I was going out there and trying to take advantage of every opportunity I had on every play”.

“He’s been banged up at times”, Carroll said. “He’s planning on playing”. The entire game illustrated Seattle’s continued evolution into a pass-first offense under Wilson – which could again shift if he’s sidelined.

So, instead of harping on the bad of Sunday (I think most of us already did that after the game), let’s focus on the positives we saw from Miami in game one of the Adam Gase era. Wilson hit Sidney Rice for a 46-yard touchdown in the final two minutes to give Seattle a 24-23 win. The Rams have also been uncommonly opportunistic against Seattle of late, returning a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the opener past year and a fumble for a touchdown to take a lead they never surrendered in the win at CenturyLink.

Added running back Thomas Rawls: “I was never really anxious about it. Russell’s a fighter, and he’s going to fight to the end”.
