Seahawks cut CB Williams, 10-game starter

Sooner came on Monday when Seattle chose to release Williams – their top free agent signing of the offseason – after making 10 starts for the team this season.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks have cut Williams only months after signing him to a three-year, $18 million contract.

Carroll added that Jeremy Lane another Seahawks cornerback was now healthy again and that factored into the decision made by the team of releasing Williams. With multiple players already stepping up, it makes cutting Williams a no-brainer.

He’s also the guy who got body slammed by Steve Smith during a preseason game.

Williams started all 10 games played and was inactive for the past two games in his first season with the club. “Williams was part of the offseason cornerback shuffle between Seattle and Philadelphia”. He was benched by Carroll during the team’s Week 11 game against San Francisco and replaced by DeShawn Shead. That’s why it seemed possible that Seattle could stash him on the bench for the rest of the season in case of an injury to a starter.

“He was a real pro”. This week the team announced that Williams was released. And the emergence of DeShawn Shead, his play has really been good.

“It was a short amount of time to try to catch up with all of the real specifics of our technique, but he did a nice job; he progressed with it”, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. His attitude was excellent. This deal included $7 million guaranteed money.

It should not come as a shock that one of the biggest priorities for the Seattle Seahawks in practice this week will be that other starting corner back position. Lane and Marcus Burley have shared time at the nickel spot.
