Seahawks cut DB Browner, an original ‘Boomer’

He played with cornerback Richard Sherman, along with safeties Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor to form the “Legion of Boom” before signing with the New England Patriots in 2014.

Meanwhile, other options emerged at safety for the Seahawks such as undrafted free agent Tyvis Powell.

Browner spent the 2011-2013 seasons with the Seahawks, first in a reserve role and then moving into the starting lineup.

Seattle plays its final preseason game Thursday night in Oakland. At 6-4, 220 pounds, Browner’s size and physicality helped the Seahawks become known as one of the toughest secondaries in the NFL.

He spent a year ago with New Orleans where he started all 16 games for a Saints team that had one of the NFL’s worst pass defenses.

Browner signed a one-year, $760,000 deal back in the spring, but the contract contained no guaranteed money. New Orleans released him after a season of injuries and penalties in an attempt to ease their salary cap burden.

Browner’s only preseason statistics were two tackles, apparently the last two he will make as a Seahawk.

The Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday reduced their roster by nine players, bringing the team down to the NFL’s 75-man roster limit.

The release comes as National Football League teams trim their rosters from 90 to 75 players before the Tuesday deadline.

Browner signed with New England and was involved in the key play of Super Bowl XLIX, a goal-line interception of Russell Wilson by Malcom Butler with 26 seconds remaining and the Seahawks going for the winning score.
