Seahawks extend top WR Baldwin 4 years

The Seattle Seahawks and wide receiver Doug Baldwin have agreed to a four-year contract extension that runs through the 2020 season. “That edge will never go away, until they force me to hang up my cleats”.

Ever since Baldwin entered the National Football League as an undrafted player in 2011, he’s been eager to prove his worth as a top notch wide receiver for the Seahawks. My guess is this spurred the Seahawks and Baldwin to get a deal done. General manager John Schneider began working in earnest in early May immediately after the draft to finalize this deal. Baldwin was in the final season of his contract worth $4 million a year and was not anxious about getting a deal done before the 2016 season started. His cap number was scheduled to be $6.325 million for 2016.

So will get a cool raise of $7.5 million per season.

“It is a big deal, and it’s a very serious negotiation as they all are”, Carroll said.

The Seahawks keep ensuring their under-30 core stays intact.

With his extension, Baldwin joins quarterback Russell Wilson, receivers Jermaine Kearse and Tyler Lockett, running back Thomas Rawls and tight end Jimmy Graham as key skill players on Seattle’s offense who are under contract for at least the next two seasons.

The extension puts Baldwin on the fringe of top-10 money for receivers, similar to the four-year, $45 million the San Diego Chargers gave Keenan Allen, and puts him ahead of star receivers like Antonio Brown (five years, $42 million) and Jordy Nelson (five years, $39 million).

Baldwin, who was undrafted out of Stanford in 2011, is coming off a season in which he caught a career-best 78 passes for 1,069 yards and an NFL-high 14 touchdowns.

Baldwin, 27, said he wasn’t anxious about the talks. “I’m focused on helping the other guys as much as I can, giving them the tools they need to be successful – just like Sidney Rice did for me when I first came in”.
