Seahawks plan ‘demonstration of unity’

You won’t see any players from the Seattle Seahawks take a knee or sit while the national anthem is being played on Sunday.

San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem prior to a preseason game on August 26, saying he was protesting police brutality against African-Americans and overall racial inequality.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin announced Saturday that he and his teammates will “stand and interlock arms in unity” as the USA anthem plays Sunday before they face the Miami Dolphins.

“Anything we want to do, it’s not going to be individual”, he told the Times. “And then we’ll see on the weekend that they’re going to do a very, very good thing”. That’s what the world needs to see. “But as a person that does see it and does see what’s really going on out here, I definitely could see me doing something about it as well”.

Ahead of the Seahawks face-off against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, members of the team recently told The Seattle Times that football fans may be in for a surprise.

Kaepernick’s 49ers teammate Eric Reid also knelt beside the quarterback before Thursday’s game against the San Diego Chargers after Kaepernick was spotted sitting on the bench a week earlier.

Colin Kaepernick has made a lot of headlines over the course of the last two weeks after refusing to stand during the national anthem prior to 49ers preseason games against the Packers and Chargers.

“We have the freedom to do whatever we want here”.

Though no specifics on any planned protest have been revealed, both Wagner and receiver Doug Baldwin spoke before the Seahawks’ practice on Wednesday about the possibility of not standing for the National Anthem.

A number of players around the league – including players at press conferences in Seattle – have been asked what they think of Kaepernick’s decision, and whether they also plan to sit. But I think it’s a very positive message.

The Seahawks kick off their regular season at CenturyLink Field against the Dolphins, on the 15th anniversary of 9/11.

The question remains whether they would be able to convince Russell Wilson – who has already weighed in on the controversy – to join in any protest that involves the whole team.
