Sean Penn Interview Helps Capture Mexican Drug Lord Joaquin ‘EI Chapo’ Guzman

According to the daily La Jornada, the organized crime division of Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (PGR) “opened a preliminary probe to investigate the USA film actor and director Sean Penn and the actress Kate del Castillo…in relation to the crime of concealment, since they were aware that Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was a fugitive from justice and nevertheless met with him without notifying Mexican authorities of the meeting”.

The US rock magazine Rolling Stone on Saturday published the interview that Guzman gave to the actors in an undisclosed jungle clearing in Mexico.

The interview came about after Guzman became interested in making a movie of his life when he was inundated with requests from U.S. movie studios, the film star said.

In the interview with “El Chapo“, Penn agreed to conditions set by Guzman, including allowing him to review the article before publication and changing the names of some sources and places to protect their identities.

Penn’s article also says while he was in prison, El Chapo received a ton of Hollywood offers, causing him to decide to create his own… a plan Mexican authorities said ultimately got him caught.

Mexico has said it will begin the process of extraditing Guzman to the USA, in line with extradition requests from 2015.

Guzman’s location was tracked to a home in Los Mochis, a Pacific coast city in his native state of Sinaloa, and marines raided the residence early Friday, an operation in which five of the kingpin’s men were killed and one marine was wounded. Trump has made controversial comments about Mexico sending criminals to the U.S.

Meanwhile, Mexican authorities are working on the possibility of extraditing Guzman to the United States. “‘El Chapo’s’ where he should be”.

Ironically, he was transported to Altiplano – the same maximum-security prison where he escaped from on July 11.

In the interview in Rolling Stone, Guzman defends his work at the head of the world’s biggest drug trafficking organization, one blamed for thousands of killings.

The online post, which called for Guzman to “traffic in love”, sparked controversy in Mexico over del Castillo’s perceived support of the drug lord.

The Rolling Stone interview emerged after Mexican prosecutors announced that they would seek Guzman’s extradition to the United States, a reversal from President Enrique Pena Nieto’s refusal to send him across the border.

“I think the case to be made privately is ‘fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”, said Andrew Porter, now in private practice.

Guzman, who is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin, has been indicted by USA authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles.

Separately on ABC’s “This Week,” McDonough said he would “let somebody else sort out what Sean Penn did and didn’t do”.

“No, that is false, because the day I don’t exist, it’s not going to decrease in any way at all”.

Trump appeared on NBC and Fox News on Sunday, but the conversations were taped and did not include his reaction to the article.

But, he added, “I find it grotesque”.
