Sean Penn: Nothing to hide over drug lord interview
Arely Gomez Gonzalez spoke Monday, the same day Mexico’s El Universal newspaper published photographs that show Penn and Kate del Castillo – a Mexican actress who helped broker the interview – reportedly arriving in Guadalajara, Mexico, ahead of meeting with Guzman.

The Mexican government announced late Sunday, January 11, that it had formally started extradition proceedings for Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel and, as it turns out, a Hollywood wannabe.
“My holidays are over”, Guzman said when he was finally caught, Televisa reported. Portions of their interview, which was conducted at a secret hideout in Mexico, were published on Rolling Stone’s website on Saturday. Nor did he consider himself a violent man despite countless murders blamed on him, he told Penn.
“Certainly, given what happened with him, I think it’s safe to assume that Mexican authorities know what they need to do to make sure that he stays behind bars”, Kirby said.
Images broadcast by Televisa showed blood and bullet holes spattered on the white walls of the house. Del Castillo has not commented, but Penn wrote in Rolling Stone that Guzman was interested in having a movie made of his life and wanted del Castillo, who had portrayed a drug trafficker in a Mexican television series, involved in the project. In Chapo’s downstairs bedroom, there were flatscreen TVs and a sofa littered with injectable testosterone, syringes, antibiotics and condoms.
But it’s not clear exactly how long that process will take, nor which of the offices that have already brought charges against Guzman would get to go first with their cases.
Pursuant to the U.S./Mexico Extradition Treaty, in advance of submitting a full extradition request, either country may seek from the other a provisional arrest warrant for a fugitive; the treaty further contemplates that, after the fugitive has been arrested, a full extradition package will be submitted.
He was first arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and extradited to Mexico.
Mexico has begun the process of extraditing Guzman to the United States, but that process will probably take “one year or longer”, the head of Mexico’s extradition office, Manuel Merino, told Radio Formula on Monday.
Chicago and Brooklyn, New York are leading contenders to host what would be one of the highest profile US criminal trials in years, former USA law enforcement officials said.
