Sean Penn: Nothing to hide over El Chapo interview

The drug kingpin initially gave Mexican security forces the slip as they staged a dawn raid, opening a secret door hidden behind a mirror in his walk-in bedroom closet, and descending into a tunnel about 30 meters long that connected to the drains. The series is set to commence airing later this fall, though a cast for the show has not yet been announced. But the process could take a year or more.

The official said that authorities were following Penn and Del Castillo’s movements all the time after they arrived in Mexico to meet with Guzman.

“CBS This Morning” host Charlie Rose revealed that he has secured the first TV interview with Sean Penn following the publication of the latter’s interview with Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who had been recaptured by Mexican authorities.

Penn has said that he was not allowed to record the interview with Guzman and Castillo, although Guzman later sent Penn a video containing further answers to the actor’s questions when a follow-up interview could not be arranged in person, Reuters reported.

Love him or hate him, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is a man with style. He faces numerous charges in the US, including drug trafficking, kidnapping and murder.

Guzman was finally captured on Friday in a raid that left five suspects dead in Los Mochis, a coastal city in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, six months after his prison break.

Penn published an article in Rolling Stone magazine on Saturday in which he quotes Guzman boasting about his drug shipments and laundering money through major Mexican and foreign companies.

Guzman’s powerful Sinaloa cartel smuggles multi-ton shipments of cocaine and marijuana as well as manufacturing and transporting methamphetamines and heroin, mostly to the U.S. He is wanted in several U.S. states.

“Have her bring the actor, and if she sees the need to bring more people, let her bring them as she likes”, Guzman said.

Those reporters didn’t settle for drinks with Guzman, pose for photos, then jet home to plan their next bit of global activism.

In them the pair discuss meeting over tequila and champagne, with Guzman promising to “take care of you more than my own eyes” while the Mexican-American actress expresses her “eagerness to see you eye-to-eye”.

Penn dismissed criticism of his visit to Guzman. Mr. Penn’s excursion, linked to Ms. Del Castillo’s intention of producing a biopic about the notorious drug purveyor, is best understood as Hollywood business at the extreme.

Gomez, the Mexican attorney general, said the actor’s meeting with the cartel boss was “essential” for Guzman’s capture.

Monday evening, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto referenced Guzman’s capture in a short new year’s message to the nation.

One troop was wounded and was on the ground. “There’s not much to say other than it is a remarkable story”, Rose added, coyly.
