The 31-year-old, who is believed to have links to Manchester but has not yet been identified, arrived in Australia a week ago.
A large-scale search has been launched for a man who went missing in Sydney’s northern beaches on Saturday evening.
Police confirmed the man had gone for a swim at South Curl Curl beach this evening after spending the day fishing with a friend.
When he failed to return about 7:00pm, the friend notified authorities.
Local officers, PolAir, water police and Surf Rescue searched the area soon after but couldn’t find the swimmer.
The missing man has been described as being of Caucasian appearance with a slim build, about 175cm tall, and with short red hair and beard.
Police have set up a command post at South Curl Curl Surf Club to co-ordinate the search, which will continue overnight.
