WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Explorers in Poland began digging Tuesday for a legendary Nazi train said to be laden with treasure and armaments.

Mr Koper, a Pole, and Mr Richter, who is German, say the Nazis made prisoners of war dig a network of tunnels in the area, and some locals have claimed the Germans tried to spirit the gold away as Russia’s Red Army closed in.

Workers were pictured last week setting a fence around the area which lines the 65km of the railway track, going from Wroclaw to Walbrzych.

The two men claimed a year ago to have located the elusive train with radar equipment deep in the bowels of the earth in the city of Walbrzych, sparking a gold rush in that area.

They’re not dissuaded by decades of fruitless searches, a scientific determination that no train is there and warnings by historians that such a train might have never even existed.

‘The tunnel may be there, but the train is not, ‘ he said.

Their announcement made global headlines and brought an influx of treasure hunters to the area.

Janusz Madej, a professor at Krakow’s AGH University of Science and Technology, said he found no evidence of such a train past year after the researchers announced they had detected it. Madej said he surveyed the area with magnetic, gravimetric and geo-radar studies, according to German news outlet dw.com. Using special equipment, the search team is planning to drill three 100-meter holes into the ground.

Undaunted, the pair hinted at “anomalies” produced by a ground-penetrating radar and said they would resume the hunt.

According to local legend, as Nazi Germany forces fled Soviet troops in 1945, they hid the train containing gold, jewels, weapons and treasured artwork in a secret tunnel near Wroclaw.
