The cruise liner turned around to retrace its route to search for the man.

“We therefore have to presume that he died in the water”, Cunard said in a statement.

The crew member is reportedly a male chef from Chile. Passengers were later called on deck and asked to look as Oprey said “every pair of eyes helps”.

Followed by the Royal Canadian Navy’s Frigate HMCS Montreal, Queen Mary 2 departs from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Friday, July 10, 2015.

“The ship was off the coast of Newfoundland and in association with local authorities, it carried out an extensive search of the area in which he went overboard but unfortunately there were no sightings”.

Hours later, Binder said the search had failed.

Late Saturday search and rescue tweeted they reduced efforts to find the man, saying the decision was taken after careful consideration on based on the likely chance of survival. Photos posted to social media by passengers showed foggy conditions as the search was ongoing.
