Seattle uses 5 home runs to pummel San Diego 16-4

They got a good outing from their starting pitcher, Nathan Karns, who gave up just 2 earned runs in 6.2 innings.

The Padres went into Wednesday night’s game against Seattle last in the NL West at 20-33, 12 games behind San Francisco.

Weirder still, backup shortstop Alexi Amarista relieved him after he’d loaded the bases up with two outs and promptly escaped with a one-pitch groundout.

Kyle Seager and Dae-Ho Lee each hit home runs, accounting for five runs as the Seattle Mariners routed the San Diego Padres 9-3 on Monday at Safeco Field.Seager gave the Mariners their first lead, at 4-2, with a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth. “He knew he needed to get deep in the game, we talked about it beforehand and he did and was efficient with his pitches”.

Then came the eighth inning, where Lee belted his seventh home run of the season to guarantee the win for the Mariners. His last big moment in the Majors was in April when he smacked a walk-off home run to snap the Mariners’ five-game skid over the Texas Rangers. I tried to get as much out of him as I could but he was at 100 pitches and you don’t want to go any farther than that. Cruz and Seager keep the inning alive with a pair of two out singles before Lind launched a 3-run homer that sailed over the wall in center field.

Hansel Robles, Mets: The reliever likely cost Steven Matz a victory after allowing three earned runs in the eighth inning against the White Sox.

“We had no idea how high (Bethancourt’s velocity) would be”, Green said.

“I thought one of the best games he’s pitched for us all year”, Seattle manager Scott Servais said. It was Smith’s second home run of the game.

By the time five innings were completed, the Mariners had 16 runs and 14 hits. Seattle won Monday’s series opener 9-3 and the Mariners have won three straight meetings with their NL rival. But our job is to get the right players who can be motivated and determined at game time.

It was 16-0 entering the sixth until the Padres at least put some runs on the board with homers from Travis Jankowski, Matt Kemp (13th on the year) and Hector Sanchez.

The Mariners announced the move Wednesday and recalled left-hander James Paxton from Triple-A Tacoma.

The Padres had lost 12 of their previous 15 games, including 16-4 pummeling Tuesday by the Mariners at Safeco Field, and were blasted publicly earlier in day by their executive chairman as “miserable failures”.

San Diego cut into the M’s lead in the top of the 6th. Felix Hernandez (4-4, 2.86 ERA) will be on the bump for the Mariners, and Christian Friedrich (1-1, 1.65 ERA) will get the ball for the Padres. Amarista, who made his own pitching debut last season in a blowout loss at Oakland, induced a first-pitch groundout with an 84 miles per hour fastball.
