Captain Marcel Schmelzer warned that Sporting and Legia will also prove tough opponents.

“Both games against Borussia Monchengladbach were tough past year, even though we won them both”.

“There was a lot of anticipation in our camp ahead of the draw”.

“Qualifying is hard part, we got through six games and we did well to get through, so it is now about focusing on the group”.

Real Madrid will renew their rivalry against Dortmund.

“I think it is hard in any group”.

“Playing against Real is, for Dortmund, nearly a classic”.

Hoops defender Kieran Tierney said: “It is the biggest competition and we are delighted to be there, but we are not just there to make up the numbers”.

Meanwhile the Hoops have never played Manchester City in continental competition, who are now managed by former Barca coach Pep Guardiola.

They are conscious of a growing financial gap between themselves and English clubs following the Premier League’s bumper £9bn television deal.

And Rodgers will have no qualms over pitting the former Fulham winger against his parent club.

“It’s not a nightmare draw at all because we are in a wonderful competition and we are really happy to be here, but in Barcelona, Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic we know it won’t be easy”.

Bayern dramatically beat Atletico in the 1974 final but Atletico took long-awaited revenge on them in the semis in April. The other side, Napoli, will meet Benfica, Besiktas and Dynamo Kiev in Group B.

Bayern will have their work cut out for them in the group stage.

Paris St Germain and Arsenal, who are attempting to reach the round of 16 for the 17th time in a row, were drawn in Group A alongside dark horses Basel and rank Bulgarian outsider Ludogorets.

Tottenham Hotspur fell short in their bid to overhaul Leicester last season, but will be similarly satisfied by being placed in Group E with CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco.

EPL champions Leicester have been given a favourable draw.
