Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai announced that the next car-free day will be organised in December at Patparganj in east Delhi.

Delhi is all set to observe its “Car Free Day” on January 22 by giving up their beloved four-wheel machines for an entire day and opting for cycles/public transport for commuting.

He added: “I am not saying that the entire Delhi will follow our appeal and if 5 or 10 percent of people follow our appeal, 10 percent pollution will come down”. All citizens are requested by the Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal to join him in using bicycles to go to work and help in controlling the rising pollution levels of the National Capital. The event will be held between 8 AM to 4 PM on the designated stretch of the area and will remain vehicle free during the period.

The Delhi CM informed that his party is working on cycle tracks to further bolster this initiative and appealed to people to choose them over cars to go to office.

“I am urging all to use their cycles to go office on that day”. Today’s event in Dwarka area kicked off with a cycle rally led by Chief Minister Kejriwal.

Suryapal Singh, a 66-year-old Dwarka Sector 12 resident, said: “We must cooperate with any good decision taken by the government, whether it is pollution, road safety or electricity”. On October 22, the transport department had held such event between from Red Fort to India Gate.

“When Gopalji made a decision to hold a Car-Free Day every month, I had doubts… whether people would participate in large numbers and whether I would be able to ride a cycle. We will ensure that it goes off successfully”, transport minister Gopal Rai said.

Residents across India’s capital will be asked to leave their vehicles at home on January 22nd
