Second case of Zika confirmed in San Bernardino County
Since the beginning of the year, DHSS has regularly updated health care providers and the public about Zika virus in addition to coordinating the approval of Missourians for testing. “We encourage those concerned about symptoms to consult their doctor, particularly if they have traveled to an affected area and particularly if they are pregnant”.
Sridhar said the International Zika Summit at the Institut Pasteur Conference Center, in Paris, this week offered a chance of a breakthrough in dealing with the virus, with key areas of discussion including vaccine development.
According to the CDC, Zika virus has the potential to be spread through a mosquito bite, through unprotected sexual contact, through blood transfusion and an infected pregnant woman can pass Zika virus to her fetus during pregnancy. Zika has also been linked to cases of autoimmune diseases in adults.
U.S. health officials have concluded that Zika infections can cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by small head size that can lead to severe developmental problems in babies.
A pregnant San Francisco woman who recently returned from a trip to Central America has tested positive for the Zika virus, health officials said Friday. There is no Zika vaccine at this time, but global research is underway. For now, the solution is to prevent mosquito bites with insect repellent, long sleeves and pants, window screens and air conditioning. The virus has been associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a disease that damages the peripheral nervous system, causing weakness and, in some cases, paralysis.
“We don’t know if the risk is somewhere in the range of 1 percent or in the range of 30 percent”, she said.
“Congress must immediately act and provide needed emergency funds so the President and his administration have all the tools they need to address Zika both here and overseas”, Clinton wrote in an op-ed in El Nuevo Dia, written in Spanish.

In an effort to further monitor the Zika virus awareness and prevention campaign, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Burwell will visit Puerto Rico on April 26, including a meeting with Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla.
