Second-Gen Tesla Roadster in the Works

That was the message from chief executive and founder Elon Musk late last week as he unveiled an upgrade to the company’s Model S sedan dubbed “ludicrous mode” and confirmed it is working on plans for a new all-electric sports auto.

The company says the speed breakthrough came via the idea for an advanced smart fuse for the battery.

“It constantly monitors current at the millisecond level and is pyro-actuated to cut power with extreme precision and certainty”, he added.

This has been coupled with an upgrade to the main battery pack contactor, which eschews steel for Inconel, an oxidation and corrosion resistant superalloy.

All of this is just speculation of course, and as we said above, Tesla are expected to give official information about the auto at their upcoming press conference, so those who’re interested in finding out what the Model X is going to offer for them should pay attention this Friday.

Musk said that deliveries of the Model X will begin in two months and that the company will start selling the Model 3 in a little more than two years.

As a result, Model S electric cars will now reflect a 10 percent improvement in the 0 to 60 miles per hour time to 2.8 secs and a quarter mile time of 10.9 secs. It does cost $10,000 to upgrade to Ludicrous, according to Jalopnik.

Model S 90D: the longest-range Model S ever produced, 90D travels up to 270 miles on a single charge. This means the battery pack can safely put out 1500 Amps instead of the “measly” 1300 Amps it was already doing.

Insane Mode has been very well-received, and Musk comments Tesla found out how to supersede it from an engineering perspective, “so we figured we should release that”.

One of the odd things that was noticed on the video of the Model X are a bunch of sensors that are suction cupped to the body of the vehicle that haven’t been seen in previous spy footage of Tesla vehicles. Tesla has said that there is to be one more speed even faster than Ludicrous, and we are being told that this will be saved for the all-new Roadster.

The Model X is Tesla’s first SUV model, and comes with seven seats as standard.
