Second Man In Texas Confirmed To Have Contracted Flesh-Eating Disease

A Buda man encountered a flesh-eating bacteria in Corpus Christi or Rockport, not Port Aransas, according to his wife, La Shelle Ruiz. Adrian Ruiz was traveling to Port Aransas with his family when they chose to take a bath.

On Sunday, Ruiz told his wife he had a headache and noticed a rash developing on his leg.

Both men were diagnosed with an infection of Vibrio vulnificus, the flesh-eating bacteria.

The flesh-eating bacteria is called Vibrio vulnificus.

Doctors suspect that a scrape on his foot was the way the bacteria entered his body, his mother said.

La Shelle Ruiz, wife of Adrian tells us, “I’ve just never seen anything like it, it’s just frightful”. It naturally lives in brackish or salt water and is more common during the summer months.

Doctors found no open cuts or wounds on Adrian’s leg. Adrian appeared to be on the road to recovery.

People can get infected if they go swimming with an open cut or wound.

“He is getting better, he was up and around the room today he is in some discomfort, but swelling is going down”, said Dr. Fausto Meza, the Seton Vice President of Medical Affairs”.

The Texas health department stated there have been 27 documented cases of Vibrio infection so far this year, 41 percent of which involved contact with water.

Despite their love for the beach, the family has resolved to include only freshwater in their forthcoming vacations.

A YouCaring.com account has been set up for the family to help with medical expenses. At the time, officials knew about an infection that had occurred a week earlier on a Galveston, Texas, beach, but not any problems in Port Aransas. A Harris County man, Brian Parrott, had his right leg amputated last week after being stricken by the bacteria after swimming at a beach in Galveston. Last year, there were 102 total reported cases, 45 percent of which are linked to water contact.

If you sustain a wound or injury while exposed to salty seawater or while handling seafood, thoroughly clean and disinfect the area immediately and seek medical attention if the area becomes inflamed.
