After shocking industry analysts with a whopping opening weekend haul of more than $100 million, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that “The Secret Life of Pets” would be getting a sequel. Voiced by Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart and a litter of other well-known names, its next high-profile Continental launch will be at the Venice Film Festival, where Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri will be honored. Illumination Entertainment is giving them exactly what they wanted, which is another animated franchise to follow in the footsteps of all things DESPICABLE ME. The project now has that weekend all to itself, but will open one week after Ant-Man and the Wasp and one week before Alita: Battle Angel.
But audiences ate it up, and now we’ll probably be seeing Secret Life of Pets sequels every two years from here to eternity.

Chris Renaud (Despicable Me) will return to direct from a script by original writer Brian Lynch (Minions), while Illumination’s Chris Meledanadri will produce the sequel with his longtime collaborator Janet Healy.
