Secunderabad-Mumbai Duronto Express derail

On August 24, five people including a Karnataka legislator were killed when a granite-laden truck rammed into an express train at a level crossing in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur.

The railways were yet to ascertain the reason for nine coaches of Duronto express derailing on early Saturday near Kalaburgi in north Karnataka, an official said on Sunday. Passengers evacuated. The Railways announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of the deceased.

The injured persons have been shifted to a nearby hospital. 7 coaches unaffected by the accident have left the site with the passengers. Ordered enquiry. Immediate medical aid and different help rushed. “Chairman of the railway board has been asked to rush to the spot”, Prabhu tweeted.

The engine and the remaining six bogies of the train proceeded to the destination at 6 am. 9 coaches of the train had jumped off the tracks.

Railway sources told Express that the work on restoring the tracks would continue till midnight. Also rescue operations have already been started and two NDRF teams from Hyderabad and Pune have also been dispatched at the accident site.

Few trains have been cancelled/partially cancelled due to the derailment of Train no.12220 Secunderabad-Mumbai LTT Duronto Express at Martur Station on Solapur Division of Central Railway.

The railway ministry has ordered a probe into the incident.
