A 30-year-old man sustained injuries to his head and leg, which police described as serious but not life-threatening.
The first guard, Nathaniel McNeil, told reporters at a press conference Thursday that he charged into the suspect, applying his weight against him as his right hand carrying the machete pointed straight down towards the ground.
Asked how he felt about being called a hero, McNeil said: “I was just doing my job”.
According to witnesses, the attacked was unprovoked.
Phillip Bonaparte, 19, the second security guard on scene, said he had gloves and grabbed the knife away from the man. “I grabbed the knife and threw it about a few feet away”, Bonaparte said.
Arlington Thompson of Queens, N.Y., appeared in court Thursday morning wearing a red hoodie and blue jeans.
A scary incident took place late Wednesday afternoon at one of the busiest intersections in Toronto when a person was attacked with a machete. They restrain the man until police arrive.
Toronto Police Sgt. Dale Corra offered praise for the teamwork that kept the situation from turning deadly.
Witnesses say a bystander tried to intervene, and the suspect then swung a weapon at them, allowing time for the victim to run inside the Atrium on Bay.
He lauded the city’s business community and local residents for working with police.

“They may have just been crossing each other on the street”, said Corra. He said normally, guards would wait for police, but that in this case they needed to act because the threat was imminent.
