Each of the royals’ head in the group photo would also be used for individual stamps so it was imperative that Mackechnie got everyone’s distance and size right.

The portrait of the British heirs, which was taken last summer in the Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace by Ranald Mackechnie, has been released by the Royal Mail as a set of four, first-class stamps commemorating the Queen’s milestone birthday on April 21.
The Duchess of Cambridge has photographed Prince George during his first day at a nursery in Norfolk.
“You only have a short window of opportunity with small children, but Prince George was on good form and everyone seemed to enjoy seeing him enjoy the day”, he told the Telegraph. “The position of each portrait within the miniature sheet was critical due to tight technical constraints”.
It’s four generations of United Kingdom royalty in one photo.
Six further stamps have also been issued. The images represent more than 100 state visits made worldwide by Her Majesty since her accession.
The family stamps include an image of the Queen with a young Prince Charles and Princess Anne, while another shows her alongside her husband the Duke of Edinburgh.

On Wednesday, the Queen visited the Royal Mail Windsor delivery office to celebrate the special stamps as well as help ring in the 500th anniversary of the postal service. All of the stamps will be available from Post Offices from tomorrow.
