See the exact moment Chad Le Clos realised #PhelpsFace was for real
On Monday Chad Le Clos, the boisterous South African who had broken Phelps’ hold over the 200m butterfly in the London 2012 final, tried to rile him by shadow boxing in front of him before Monday’s semi-finals.

Phelps will begin his quest for a 22nd Olympic gold medal on Wednesday with preliminary heats for the 200m individual medley, an event he won at the expense of American team-mate Ryan Lochte in London. “That race was my bread and butter, and just to see the No. 1 by my name in the 200 fly one last time, I couldn’t have scripted it any better”.
“I told Bob [Bowman, his coach] when I came back how bad I wanted that 200m fly”, added Phelps. “I’m just thankful. I wanted that one back”. “Doing a double like that is a lot harder than it once was”.
The Phelps gold rush is unlikely to be finished with the 100m butterfly and more relay glory still on the cards.
Katie Ledecky of the United States has captured her second gold medal, winning the 200-meter freestyle.
France took the silver in 3:10.53, while Australia claimed the bronze in 3:11.37, holding off a Russian team that was booed during the introductions – a reminder of the drug scandal that has rocked the nation.
Phelps’ emotion was understandable for the 200m butterfly is his signature event: the one he cherishes the most and has owned the longest.
Katie Ledecky, leading the new generation of American swimming stars, captured her second gold of the Games by holding off a courageous charge from Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to take the women’s 200m freestyle final in 1:53.73.
While his younger teammates celebrated their almost three-second victory around him, Phelps sat down, a satisfied, if a bit winded, 31-year-old Olympic legend. “That’s the closest I’ve ever come to throwing up after a race”.
Phelps said he had been prepared to leave “every ounce” in the pool, and strain every sinew.
He has one more race Tuesday night, anchoring the usa team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. “Especially last night and the night before, just seeing U.S. just rocking and we’re going to keep that really for the rest of the week”.

But the South African could only manage fourth this time, also finishing behind bronze medalist Tamas Kenderesi of Hungary. “It was a frustrating race for me and it’s good for the sport to be able to have a competitor like that”. “I couldn’t have gone any faster, it’s impossible”. Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of Britain challenged Hosszu all the way but had to settle for silver.
