Self-injecting contraceptive made available for home use

It also doesn’t contain oestrogen, which some groups of women are unable to take due to risks and side effects, and unlike the oral contraceptive pill it won’t be affected by other medications.

Young women will today be offered a DIY contraceptive jab for free on the health service.

The injection is already available if given by a doctor or nurse but the drugs regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, has just given it a licence to be administered at home.

Pfizer’s Seema Patel says: “We appreciate that many women are very busy and that visiting their healthcare professional regularly to pick up their contraception can be a challenge”.

And now a brand spanking new option has just become available, Pfizer’s Sayana Press – a long-acting contraceptive you can inject yourself at home.

But overall the more choice and the more power and control that women have over their own bodies, the better their health outcomes will be. Aside from that, women are required to undergo instructional training from professional medical providers to ensure that they administer their injectable contraceptives correctly at home. These options should be appropriate depending on the period of their lives that they are now in.

Manufacturers are instead aiming it at busy women in their twenties and thirties as an alternative to the Pill, which many forget to take. For example, women who use oral contraceptives perfectly will experience nearly complete protection against pregnancy.

The pharmaceutical company also expressed their intent to extend the updated label of Sayana Press to other nations, specifically those belonging to the developing world, including Senegal, Uganda and Burkina Faso.

Approval for self-injection is also pending in other European countries.

“This is an exciting milestone for women in the United Kingdom, and, potentially, in countries around the world, who might prefer this method of contraception and mode of administration”. This method is known for its discrete and convenient features that help women improve compliance.
