Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that’s been tied to thousands of cases-mainly in Brazil-of a severe birth defect called microcephaly.
The state Controlling Board OK’d $99,625 to buy the “BG Sentinel mosquito traps” from California-based Bio-Quip Products Inc., as part of the Ohio Department of Health’s zoonotic disease program. The majority were in people who traveled to Zika-afflicted countries, but at least six were sexually transmitted.
“This research can help us anticipate the timing and location of possible Zika virus outbreaks in certain USA cities”, said Andrew Monaghan of NCAR.
World Health Organization has received only 3 million dollars of the 65 million it has requested in the fight against Zika, even though there is a risk that the virus could be transmitted in other regions by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, Chan noted.
“Among the 115 [U.S.] patients with travel-associated infection, all patients reported clinical illness”, the CDC said. Zika has also been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune system disorder that can occasionally lead to a fatal form of paralysis. Most Americans live in air-conditioned rooms which are sealed from the outdoors which lessens the contact between humans and disease-causing mosquitoes.
