Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that’s been tied to thousands of cases-mainly in Brazil-of a severe birth defect called microcephaly.

The state Controlling Board OK’d $99,625 to buy the “BG Sentinel mosquito traps” from California-based Bio-Quip Products Inc., as part of the Ohio Department of Health’s zoonotic disease program. The CDC also cautioned other travelers to Cuba, which lies less than 100 miles south of Florida, to take precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, including protecting themselves from mosquito bites and using condoms or abstaining from sex.

Data from Brazil, the epicenter of an epidemic that has hit more than three dozen countries and territories in the Americas, show that about 39 percent of 2,212 investigated cases of microcephaly are already confirmed for the rare congenital condition.

And Dr George Warimwe, from the Jenner Institute in the Nuffield Department of Medicine, will study the transmission of Zika in an area of East Africa, providing vital information on how the disease spreads. The majority were in people who traveled to Zika-afflicted countries, but at least six were sexually transmitted.

“This research can help us anticipate the timing and location of possible Zika virus outbreaks in certain USA cities”, said Andrew Monaghan of NCAR.

World Health Organization has received only 3 million dollars of the 65 million it has requested in the fight against Zika, even though there is a risk that the virus could be transmitted in other regions by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, Chan noted.

“Among the 115 [U.S.] patients with travel-associated infection, all patients reported clinical illness”, the CDC said. The virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys and was first identified in people in 1952 in Uganda and Tanzania, according to the WHO. Recent evidence suggests a link between infection in pregnant women and infants born with microcephaly.

At the time of the announcement, the state said the person had recovered and was no longer infectious.

Health officials in Bangladesh shared more details about a retrospective Zika virus case detected from a blood sample collected in 2014, Xinhua reported today.

Zika has also been linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune system disorder that can occasionally lead to a fatal form of paralysis. Most Americans live in air-conditioned rooms which are sealed from the outdoors which lessens the contact between humans and disease-causing mosquitoes.
